Staff Scientist in Superconducting Physics and Engineering for Accelerators

Argonne National Laboratory invites strong candidates to apply for a staff scientist position in superconducting physics and engineering in the Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The APS is the brightest source of high-energy X-rays in the Western Hemisphere and the largest scientific user facility in North America, with more than 3500 scientists visiting each year to study the structure of materials and processes at the atomic scale. The successful candidate will work with a group of physicists, engineers, and technicians and will play a lead role in the design, engineering, development, construction, implementation, testing, and commissioning of superconducting undulator (SCU) and/or superconducting radio frequency (SRF) systems including cryogenic systems for the APS upgrade.

Applicants must have a doctorate in a relevant engineering or physical science field and at least six years of subsequent experience or equivalent; considerable expertise in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of superconducting devices including cryogenic systems, preferably related to superconducting magnet and/or SRF technology; comprehensive knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer processes; experience in the use of CAD software such as ProEngineer or SolidWorks, and FEA software such as ANSYS; and experience with mechanical cryocoolers. Good knowledge of undulators as synchrotron radiation sources is a plus.

The level at which an applicant will be hired will be dependent upon their qualifications and experience. Interested candidates should apply through the Argonne web site www.anl.gov/jobs for requisition #317503: Principal Superconducting Scientist. Requests for additional information should be addressed to Dr. Alexander Zholents, Director of the Accelerator Systems Division.

For full consideration all materials should be received by June 31, 2011. However, applications may continue to be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled.
