ASTA R&D / User Facility Program Director (Scientist II)

A new accelerator science user facility – the Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator (ASTA) at Fermilab – is scheduled to be constructed in 2012-13 with a goal to begin the first beam physics experiments in 2013. The ASTA will be a state-of-the-art electron linear accelerator facility based on International Linear Collider (ILC) technology providing 40 MeV to 1 GeV high-power high-peak and high-average brightness electron beams to several experimental areas.

Fermilab's Accelerator Physics Center (APC) seeks a Scientist of international stature and a proven record of accomplishment in the field of accelerator physics for the position of the ASTA R&D and User Facility Program Director. The ASTA will enable a collaborative R&D program, hosted by Fermilab, which engages United States Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, universities, and companies with an interest in Advanced Accelerator R&D (AARD) and technologies. Under the guidance of the Program Director, the experiments will be evaluated at the stage of proposals by an external Program Committee and carried out at the ASTA by the users in collaboration with Fermilab's operational and scientific staff.

The Program Director is expected to provide leadership and vision for the scientific program; to lead the AARD activities at the ASTA; and to play a strategic role in shaping the accelerator R&D landscape at Fermilab and in the US. As part of Fermilab's APC, the selected professional will lead the ASTA Department and coordinate AARD efforts at Fermilab; engage with other laboratories, universities and companies to strengthen the ASTA collaboration; and serve as the primary interface with the collaborating institutions. The Program Director will lead Fermilab's accelerator science activities within Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Chicago and the Fermilab collaboration. Reporting to the Director of Fermilab's APC, the ASTA Program Director will advise the Fermilab Directorate on the overall scientific and management strategy for AARD and User's Program at ASTA.

The Program Director is expected to respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.

The Program Director is expected to abide by all environmental, safety, and health regulations.
