EDITOR'S COMMENTS

With this issue of Physics & Society, we begin a series of papers, all with the title "What are nuclear weapons for?". The series is meant to stimulate thought about nuclear weapons policy, about national and international security, and how the enormous changes since the end of the Cold War might, or might not, suggest the need for significant changes in nuclear weapons policy. The authors all are, or have been, very senior level participants in issues related to nuclear weapons, such as weapons design and production, international nuclear arms negotiations, or nuclear policy formulation. I consider it an honor to publish these papers by such distinguished experts, and I thank them for sharing their views with the readers of Physics & Society. (JJM)
