Nan Phinney - Curriculum Vitae

Brief Summary

Linear colliders have been my primary scientific focus for more than 35 years at SLAC. My most important contributions were on the SLC, where I worked on the control system, design and commissioning, and then led the SLC effort from 1990 until 1998. During this period, the SLC luminosity increased by nearly three orders of magnitude and this data provided the world’s most precise constraint on the mass of the Higgs boson. Since then I have worked on the NLC and the ILC. I co-chaired the Reliability subgroup of the 2nd Linear Collider Technical Review Committee, was a member of the US Technology Options Study, and was chief editor of the ILC Reference Design Report. I was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Elementary Particle Physics in 1995-7, and a member of both HEPAP Accelerator Subpanels in 1995-6 and 2005-6. I served as Chair of the APS Division of Physics of Beams in 2004 and was a founding member of the California Section, now Far West Section. I was the first Speaker of the APS Council of Representatives in 2015 and 2016 after corporate reform and a member of the APS Board of Directors. At APS, I co-chaired the group drafting the post reform Policies and Procedures in 2014, chaired the Strategic Planning Task Force in 2017, and was a founding member and 2022 Chair of the Ethics Committee. My last role at SLAC before retirement was as head of the Accelerator Design Department and Deputy Head of the Accelerator Research Division.
