Invited Speaker & Abstract Guidelines

Invited Speaker Talks

Speaker Eligiblity

APS members may be invited to present one scientific abstract per APS March or April meeting. Individual speakers will not be invited to speak at two consecutive March or April meetings, e.g. an invited speaker who presented at March Meeting 2023 will not be invited to speak at March Meeting 2024.

Exceptions are made for speakers who will receive APS Prizes and Awards at the meeting.

Invited Speakers & Abstract & Poster Submission Eligibility

Invited speakers may submit one contributed abstract and poster for the regular scientific program in addition to their invited talk. They will receive an invited speaker letter, usually in October, with information about submitting their abstract and/or poster and registration.

Invited Speaker Registration

Please note that invited speakers must still register for the meeting. The speaker confirmation email will specify whether the speaker need to pay for their own meeting registration or if they are sponsored by an APS Unit.

Plenary Speaker Talks

APS April Meeting plenary speakers may only give a plenary talk once every three years. For example, a 2022 plenary speaker may not give another plenary talk until 2025.

Invited Abstract Guidelines

Eligibility

An invited abstract may have only one author, the invitee. APS suggests that the invitee credit collaborating researchers in a footnote within the paper. Please note that the limit for invited abstract text is approximately 2,000 characters. The invitee must deliver the paper, unless a replacement speaker is agreed upon beforehand, via email to APS Abstract Help.

Submitting Multiple Invited Abstracts

One additional abstract of a non-technical nature may be presented at a session of broad concern to the physics community if it is sponsored by an APS Forum or Committee.

Withdrawing an Invited Abstract

If an invited speaker accepts an invitation to present but is later unable to do so, the speaker must contact APS Abstract Help.

Presentation Time

At the APS March and April meetings, an invited paper is usually given 30 minutes for presentation, plus six more minutes for questions. Unit meeting presentation times vary.
