Career Mentoring Fellows

APS Career Mentoring (CM) Fellows are physicists working in industry, government, or academia, who are interested in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and early career scientists. CM Fellows have the opportunity to learn and teach about diverse career paths of physics degree holders and establish a stronger connection with the physics community.

Applications for the 2023-2024 cycle are closed. The next application cycle will begin in June 2024.

Program Components

As a Career Mentoring (CM) Fellow, you can expect to:

• Receive implicit bias training.
• Receive mentor training.
• Gain expertise about physics careers and learn about APS Career Resources.

To fulfill this role, you will have the opportunity to do one or more of the following:

• Provide feedback on presentations in the undergraduate research sessions at APS Meetings. For 2023-2024: APS March Meeting, APS April Meeting, or the DPP Annual Meeting. If you participate as a CM Fellow, you may qualify to receive partial travel funding and compensated meeting registration based on financial need and available resources.
• Participate in career mentoring and résumé help desk in APS Job Fairs.
• Give a talk at an institution near you, at an APS CUWiP, or a conference of your choice to raise awareness about diverse physics careers using APS resources.

Who Should Apply

Physicists working in industry as well as those in academia, including postdocs or faculty, are encouraged to apply.

Ideal applicants will have:

• An interest in learning about diverse physics careers and mentoring students,
• Previous volunteer or mentoring experience with students/early career scientists,
• Leadership skills, preferably related to activities benefiting students, and
• An interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Application

To qualify, you will need to submit an application answering questions about:

• Your interest in physics careers,
• Past volunteer work with APS or other organizations,
• Past experience with mentoring,
• A short statement listing your interest in, and any past experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

You will also need to provide a half page statement of support from a student or early career scientist detailing your investment in mentoring or supporting students and early career physicists.
