A Note from the DCMP Chair

The March Meeting this year in New Orleans promises a wide spectrum of invited and contributed talks and special events. The DCMP is the largest Division of the American Physical Society and we take pride in contributing significantly to the meeting’s success, topicality, and breadth. A DCMP session focused on early career programs supported by the funding agencies will be held Monday evening. On Tuesday evening, we will celebrate the newly elected fellows and hold our DCMP business meeting. At this event, you can comment on draft amendments to the By-Laws and hear a report from the Executive Committee on new programs including graduate student travel awards; a collaboration of the APS Panel on Public Affairs with DCMP members to approach national and state congressional representatives; and other important business of the Division. I hope to see you there!

2016 DCMP Election Results

The results of the 2016 Division of Condensed Matter Physics election for Vice Chair and Members-at-Large of the executive committee are:

Vice Chair: Dan Arovas
Members-at-Large: Mark Freeman, Kathleen Stebe, and Rashid Zia

Approximately 14% of the 6,510 DCMP members voted in the 2016 DCMP election. We would like to congratulate those elected and express my gratitude to all the DCMP members who agreed to stand as candidates during this election. The DCMP benefits greatly from those who are willing to run for office and serve the condensed matter physics community. We would also like to thank our colleagues who will be leaving office in 2017: Sharon Glotzer (past chair) and David Grier, Francis Houle, and Joel Moore (members-at-large), all of whom have performed valuable services to the DCMP.

Finally, thanks to the members of the 2016 DCMP nominating committee — Barbara Jones (Chair), Sharon Glotzer, Andy Kent, and Brad Marston — and to Allison Betz and her colleagues at MyDirectVote for the online and paper ballot distribution and counting.

The APS March Meeting 2017

The APS March Meeting 2017 will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from Monday, March 13 to Friday, March 17, 2017. The March Meeting 2017 headquarters hotel is the Marriot New Orleans, and the March Meeting 2017 venue is the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Division of Condensed Matter Physics Graduate Student Travel Awards

The DCMP Graduate Student Travel Award Program has been established to assist the professional development and careers of graduate student researchers. This year, we awarded ten $500 DCMP Travel Awards and ten Honorable Mention recognitions to allow graduate student members of DCMP to participate in APS March Meeting 2017 sessions. The selection was based on merit and the committee consisted of members of the DCMP Executive Committee.

The DCMP Graduate Student Travel Awards will be presented at the DCMP/DMP New Fellows and Award Winners Reception, Tuesday, March 14, New Orleans Marriott, Mardi Gras Ballroom ABCD (3rd Floor).
